The storyline basically takes the premise, “What if people were inspired by comic books to become superheroes?” It is an alternate reality of the 60s where Nixon is in his fourth term, superheroes exist (yet all but government contracted ones are outlawed), and the Cold War is at the tensest point possible. To really go any more in-depth would ruin the awe of discovering the little nooks and crannies of Watchmen itself. It is a wonderful book, and the movie looks faithful. If you have the chance, read the book, as there are some parts of the comic (such as the autobiography of a retired super) that cannot be transferred to screen.
To put it simply:
It’s about a retired team of superheroes that are reunited after one of their former teammates is brutally murdered in his Manhattan apartment. As the mysteries of his murder begin to unravel, the heroes realize that it was all a part of a much larger conspiracy. Along the way, the heroes recollect on their experiences and question how their lives have impacted the world and its people, as well as why they became heroes in the first place.
It’s about a group of six former superheroes in a 1985 where superheroes have existed for fifty years and have affected the world because of it. However, none of them actually have superpowers, except one. They got outlawed in the 1970s and ever since the United States and Soviet Union have been moving closer to all-out nuclear war. The story starts when the Comedian, one of the former superheroes, gets killed by an unknown person. Rorschach, a brutal and vicious hero who never stopped fighting crime even when it became illegal, starts investigating the murder and believes there’s a conspiracy to kill all the former heroes.
The other characters are Dr. Manhattan, the one person with real superpowers who can do just about anything but doesn’t care about humanity anymore; Nite Owl, who was Rorschach’s former crimefighting partner but who has become insecure and unhappy since superheroes got outlawed; the Silk Spectre, who was pushed into crimefighting by her superhero mother and never really enjoyed it; and Ozymandias, who is the smartest man in the world and became a billionaire and celebrity when he retired.
Throughout the story Rorschach and the others begin to learn that the Comedian’s death was the gateway to a huge conspiracy that threatens millions of lives, but nothing is as it seems.
